Associate Professor James Charles McAlister

Dr James McAlister is an Eye surgeon with subspecialty experience in treating disease of the Cornea and Ocular Surface Disease as well as Cataract and Refractive Surgeon. He graduated with Honours from the University of London. His specialist training was based in London at world’s largest Eye Hospital, Moorfield’s and was a TFC Frost clinical research fellowship recipient which took him to Institute of Ophthalmology and Schepens Eye Research Institute affiliated to University College London and Harvard University, Boston respectively looking at Gene therapy strategies in corneal disease. His training continued with a 16 months Fellowship in Cornea, External Eye disease and Refractive Surgery at Moorfield’s Hospital followed by one year Fellowship in Cornea and External Eye Disease at Southampton Hospital.

He is strongly grounded in research with a background which centres on; the evolving role of Corneal Crosslinking and its efficacy in treatment of progressive disease, various refractive interventions for Keratoconus, and dry eye disease.

He offers clinical specialist expertise in corneal transplantation, ocular surface tumours, Infections and Auto-Immune disease of the Ocular Surface. His refractive interests are balanced between personally tailored Laser and Implant correction to maximise patient’s visual outcomes. His expertise also encompasses standard and complex cataract surgery.

Dr McAlister was previously a Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland before taking up the position of Associate Professor at Griffith University. Dr McAlister has published numerous peer reviewed journal articles. He regularly presents his work nationally and internationally. His clinics also provide a regular teaching commitment to medical students and Optometry graduates.

 

 

Kylie McNeill

Kylie graduated as an Optometrist from QUT in 2009 with First Class Honours and was the recipient of the Optometrists Association of Australia Clinical Excellence Award.  She is a therapeutically endorsed Optometrist having completed the Graduate Certificate in Ocular Therapeutics – enabling her to prescribe ocular medications.  Additionally to Eyesmatter, Kylie works as a clinical supervisor at QUT Optometry Clinic teaching and examining the final year optometry students within the specialist contact lens and ocular therapeutics clinics.

Kylie is skilled in complex contact lens fitting, she is a Fellow of the British Contact Lens Association and in 2016 participated in an observership programme within the contact lens department at the esteemed Moorsfield’s Eye Hospital in London.

Kylie is a thorough and meticulous Optometrist with excellent communicative skills.  She will always take the time needed to explain her advice and recommendations in a patient-friendly manner.

She feels privileged to be working alongside Assoc Prof McAlister at Eyesmatter, as this complements her special interest in the vision care and management of patients with corneal conditions such as keratoconus.

At Eyesmatter, Kylie provides an independent Optometry service offering consultations in:

  • Early keratoconus diagnosis and monitoring;
  • Specialised contact lens fitting;
  • Myopia control (including Ortho-K contact lenses and low dose atropinisation)
  • Refractive surgery suitablity assessment (LASKIK / ICLs / etc)
  • Dry Eye Management.
